Switzerland and Israel – A Study

S. T. Levin News & Notes 0 0

Forty to fifty years ago, when I was 30-40 years old, I learned that two small countries each possessed aircraft deliverable atomic bombs numbering in the dozens.

[For a several month period, there had been a political propaganda campaign against the ‘Justification’ for one of those two countries, in terms of what then passed for “International Law,” possessing the Moral Right to use such atomic weapons to retaliate for BEING INVADED.]

With the sole exception of a non-fiction classic about the Swiss Army by John McPhee – which I so much enjoyed reading, serialized, in the (Liberal) New Yorker Magazine, which I read regularly, by subscription, in the 1970’s and 1980’s – I have never once read or heard of the deliverable Atomic Bombs that Switzerland then possessed.  These bombs were loaded onto planes that were on runways, hidden in caves, so that they would be fully prepared at all times to take off if and when needed.  They existed in the 1980’s or earlier because there was always the threat that the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact satellites might invade Western Europe at any time.  There were no tactical nuclear weapons stationed in NATO countries to defend them from a Soviet invasion until some point in the Reagan Administration when he managed to overcome the massive media-assisted propaganda campaign and station them there.

[During World War II, for the first time in Swiss history, for three or more years, the fully-mobilized Reserve Swiss Army (the army Ben Gurion modeled the IDF after) vigorously defended its borders against Nazi German military probes.  Otherwise Nazi Germany (the political evil empire of the devil-incarnate of that era) would have moved in militarily and taken over in the same way they did in Denmark and Norway in early 1940.  (Sweden then still had a powerful military that rivaled Switzerland’s and was judged too costly to invade.)]

During the Cold War, Switzerland was equally prepared to defend its people and territory.  The Soviet Union continually threatened to overrun all of NATO Europe.  HOWEVER, should they attempt to conquer militarily-defended Switzerland, dozens of nuclear weapons would destroy much of the Soviet Union’s conquests and slaughter millions of people.

[In the 1980’s, the greatest political struggle of the Reagan Administration (against massive amounts of highly-organized anti-nuclear media-promoted Protestors and Demonstrators all over Western civilization) was to place tactical nuclear weapons in Western European NATO countries to serve the exact same purpose that the secret Swiss nuclear weapons served to defend neutral Switzerland from invasion by what was then the devil-incarnate’s evil empire.]
